The House of Representatives’ committee on Maritime Safety, Administration and Education, has embarked on maritime facilities assessment tour to China as part of the efforts to revive the sub-sector.
The Chairman of the committee, Mr Umar Bago made this known in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.
The Rep. said the committee, in continuation of its official assignment in China, carried out an aerial assessment tour of Cranes Depot in Nisham province on Monday.
He said since its arrival in the Communist State, the committee has been meeting with Chinese investors and manufacturers of maritime and ports equipment.
According to him, the contacts have expressed readiness to come and invest in Nigeria.
He said the visit was sequel to the Federal Government’s resolve to diversify the nation’s economy to non-oil sectors.
Bago added that the massive development of Ports and enhancement of facilities within and outside it were part of the effort to revive the sector.
The lawmaker said the effort has given birth to Baro Inland Port, which would be inaugurated soon.
He added that the committee made significant input in the emergence of Baro and other dry ports across the country.
Bago said the facility tour to China was aimed at ensuring the acquisition of the state-of-arts equipment to make the ports functional.
“The House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Yakubu Dogara would continue to be at the forefront of all endeavors aimed at putting the nation on the path of development and growth”, he said.
