The Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, Akwa Ibom State has got a new Governing Council.
While the board chairman is Chief Mike Abiotomere, other members are: Alhaji Abdulmumini Yunusa, Chief Oliver Agbasoga, Reuben Aggo, the Rector of MAN, Oron, Mr. Joshua Okpo and a representative of the Federal Ministry of Transport.
Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, who formally inaugurated the board at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, said the appointment was “well deserved”.

Umar, who was the chairman of the occasion which attracted dignitaries from all walks of life, noted that the maritime potentials of the country need to be fully harnessed in line with the transformation agenda of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
The minister reminded the board members of government efforts to collaborate with the World Maritime University (WMU), Malmo, Sweden in order to transform the academy into a degree awarding institution. He enjoined the board members to pursue the mandate of the academy with vigour.
In his remarks, the Academy’s Rector; Okpo noted that President Jonathan’s administration and the National Assembly have in the last few years done so much to improve maritime education. He added that the support and co-operation of President Jonathan and the legislature have given impetus for a robust training programme which has gingered more Nigerians, especially young adults to show keen interest in maritime and other related studies.
