Barely one month after a set of  Nigerian seafarers  from BW Fleet Management Services, Shell Ship Management Ltd and Anglo Eastern Group Ltd attended a month long training programme at the now-famous South Africa’s maritime training centre; SAMTRA, another batch of Nigerian ratings have arrived the institute to attend a month long training programme which covered the mandatory STCW courses including First Aid at Sea, Personal Safety & Social Responsibility and Personal Survival Techniques, Tanker Familiarisation as well as Fire Fighting.
The fresh set of Nigerian seafarers were reportedly sent to South Africa by another indigenous company; Gulf Manning Services Nigeria.
This latest initiative reflects the growing interest in South African training facilities by West African companies in the oil & gas industry as a cost- effective solution to their training needs.
Apart from offering Simulator based and STCW courses for the Maritime Industry, SAMTRA also provides a Cadet Administrative service which includes selection and recruitment of cadets, co-ordinating their STCW Training, administration services, logistics and ongoing performance.
The ratings are expected to participate in various courses including: Able Seaman, PSSR & PST, First Aid at Sea, Engine Room Familiarisation, Deck Familiarisation and were among the first to participate in the newly SAMSA accredited Designated Security Duties and the STCW Basic Training for Liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations courses which are in compliance with the Manila amendments
