As the entire maritime world appreciates the contributions and sacrifices of seafarers in international sea borne trade, the Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN) has concluded plans to be part of the annual celebration.
As the entire maritime world appreciates the contributions and sacrifices of seafarers in international sea borne trade, the Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN) has concluded plans to be part of the annual celebration.
June 25 of each year is the "Day of the Seafarer" aimed at recognizing the invaluable contribution seafarers make to international trade and the world economy, often at great personal cost to themselves and their families. The “Day of the Seafarer” has now been included in the annual list of United Nations Observances.
In commemoration of this day, MARAN is inviting government agencies, shipping organizations, companies, shipowners and all other parties concerned to support it in promoting and celebrating the Day in an appropriate and meaningful manner.
According to a statement issued in Lagos, the association said that it is hosting a seminar to focus attention on the contributions of seafarers to global commerce. “By hosting this seminar on seafarers, we want to show respect, recognition and gratitude to Nigerian seafarers”, the statement which was jointly signed by chairman and secretary of the organizing committee, Messrs Ray Ugochukwu and Enyeribe Anyanwu, respectively.
The “Day of the Seafarer” is also an opportunity to educate the public about issues facing the modern-day seafarer – issues such as piracy. But, most importantly, it is the occasion for us to say “Thank you, seafarers.”
The event which is scheduled for Monday June 25, 2012 will hold at the MARAN press centre in Apapa, Lagos has as its theme: Whither the Nigerian Seafarer?
