“The BPE must carry out its functions to the benefit of majority of the citizenry,’ he said.

President of the Senior Staff Association, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mr Umar Jimoh, has   advised the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to carry stakeholders along in the concession of marine services.
Jimoh told reporters in Lagos yesterday that the views of stakeholders in the maritime sector must be considered by BPE in the process to concession marine services.
“The BPE must carry out its functions to the benefit of majority of the citizenry,’ he said.
Jimoh also advised that the job of destination inspection of goods should be given to the Nigeria Customs Service from July, stressing that the customs had the capacity to examine goods.
“Adequate motivation of customs officers will make them perform more than what the service providers that have been doing it for more than seven years,“ he said.
The Federal Government had entered into a six-year agreement with some service providers for infrastructure upgrade, risk management and training of customs officers.
The agreement was signed on Jan. 1, 2006 and was to terminate on Dec. 31, 2012, but was extended by six months.
The service providers are Cotecna, Global Scan System, SGS and Web Frontaine.
Jimoh said that the NPA was doing a good job of managing marine/ harbour services to the benefit of the nation.
“NPA is healthy and we are on top of maritime business.
“BPE should flash its torchlight on areas that performance is poor and not on NPA that is carrying out its statutory duties very well,” he said.
