The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) says it is seeking the domestication of its laws in Nigeria to enable it to deliver on its mandate.
Raynolds Shodeinde, the Assistant Director, Administration, CILT, said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday that the bill had been passed by the National Assembly.
He disclosed that CILT, which would be 60 in Nigeria in October, was yet to have legal backing to function like its counterparts in the United Kingdom and other countries where it had been domesticated.
“So far, these are the things we have been involved with but we can still do more given the necessary legal backing, talking about our bill currently at the National Assembly.
“If we get that bill passed into law to domesticate CILT in Nigeria, that will give us better legitimacy and will better position us to regulate the quality of manpower in the logistics and transport sector.
“We will be able to fulfill all those mandates with which CILT was established and founded in Nigeria.
“We will be able to eliminate quacks in the industry; we will be able to introduce ethics for the practitioners in the industry.
“And then, we will have the ability by that time to recommend better policies will that will grow the industry. ’’
Shodeinde said that CILT had nevertheless, being involved in several transport policy formulations in the country such as the National Transport Policy being drafted by the Federal Ministry of Transportation.
He disclosed that the institute had also being exercising influence over transport education in Nigeria, adding that CILT regulates and accredits institutions that teach or train transport education.
According to him, Nigerian Institute for Transport Technology (NITT) runs CILT syllabus and so many academic institutions such as universities and polytechnics.
“The National Universities Commission (NUC) recognises our syllabus as well as the National Board for Technical Education (NABTE) at the polytechnic level.
“We have over the years trained professionals, deepen professionalism through our diplomas such as our International Diploma and International Advanced Diploma in Logistics and Transport,’’ he said.
Shodeinde, however, called for the development of intermodal transportation system in the country to reduce over-dependence on road for movement of goods and services.
He said that there should be a linkage between ports, rail and road to achieve efficient transport sector in Nigeria.
