Maritime Workers Union to Create Welfare Package for Members

Despite the recent donation made to the family of late comrade Ibrahim Isa Salem as a way of assistance, plans are still on-going by the Maritime Workers Union Of Nigeria (MWUN) to better the lots of its members who work in ports outside Lagos State.
Dockworkers and seafarers outside the state have been lamenting low inflow of vessels into the port which, according to them, has made life difficult.

Despite the recent donation made to the family of late comrade Ibrahim Isa Salem as a way of assistance, plans are still on-going by the Maritime Workers Union Of Nigeria (MWUN) to better the lots of its members who work in ports outside Lagos State.
Dockworkers and seafarers outside the state have been lamenting low inflow of vessels into the port which, according to them, has made life difficult.
President of NPA Branch of  MWUN; Comrade Adeleke Sanni said in a chat with Shipping Position Daily, last week that the kind gesture of the President General of the union, Comrade Anthony Nted Emmanuel led to the idea of assisting members in states outside Lagos.    
“There is a programme that we want to do in order to alleviate the suffering of some of our members”, he disclosed.
“We are looking as dockworkers in particular, because we have situations in Calabar, Warri and other ports where they do not have ships often and over there, it is when you work that you get paid and if you don’t then no pay”.
“We want to do a launch and bring the money into a pool and there is going to be a scheme where people can borrow money which is more like a revolving loan, Sanni affirmed”.
According to him, parts of the donation gathered at last week fund-raising for the family of late comrade Isa Ibrahim will also go into the scheme.
“Part of the money realised from the donation will go to the family of Isa Ibrahim while y=the remaining will go to the forthcoming scheme, but most of the donations will go to the family, he added”.
However Shipping Position Daily gathered that more than N6 million was realised from the fund-raising ceremony, majority being donations made by members of the union, the president general donated of N1.5Million.
