The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has clarified its stance on illegal toll collection at port access ways.

The union, in a meeting with Tin Can Island Port Manager, Mr. Jibril Buba emphasized that it is not involved in the illegal toll collection and associated chaos, even as it explained that certain unidentified associations and unions are responsible for the disturbances, engaging in unauthorized ticket sales and extortion from truck drivers.

The MWUN in a statement issued by its head of Media; Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna after the meeting with the Port Manager on Friday, stated that the President General of the union  Comrade Adewale Adeyanju clarified that MWUN’s jurisdiction is limited to operating within the ports and its vicinity.

Adeyanju emphasized that roads fall under the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Lagos State Park and Garages Management, and not the MWUN.

Adeyanju stressed that MWUN’s collaboration with Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is crucial, and the union will not partake in any illegal activities detrimental to the port’s development or the nation’s economy.

The President General also condemned attacks on dock workers by groups posing as associations or unions, vowing that MWUN will respond with force if further attacks occur.

He highlighted that the port is regulated by federal government agencies, and any entity interested in port activities must adhere to proper channels and seek NPA approval.

He added that MWUN’s constitution establishes a Haulage District with the authority to collect check-off dues from truck drivers who are union members. The union emphasized its exclusive right to operate within the ports, collaborating with NARTO, and warned against unauthorized encroachments into the port area without relevant agency approval.

In conclusion, Adeyanju stated that MWUN remains committed to collaborating with NPA and government agencies to foster an investor-friendly environment in the seaports, and contributing to the nation’s economic growth.
