MWUN Strike: BUA, PTOL Count Loses At Port Harcourt Ports.

Days after the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) embarked on a one
day nation-wide strike, terminal operators at the Port Harcourt Ports are still
counting their loses, as a result of the action.
Our checks at the Port Harcourt Ports revealed that the labour’s sit- at-
home action negatively affected the operations at the quays.
Shipping Position Weekly was authoritatively informed that on that day of the action, there were only skeletal activities only at the offices of the Terminal Operators.

A dockworker with the BUA Ports and Terminal, who simply identified himself as Mr. Abiye told our correspondence that they were pressing further for better wages, noting that it is unfortunate that the terminal operators at the Port Harcourt Ports are still paying them below living wages. He noted that the action was peaceful at BUA, even as he noted the majority of them remained at home, to avoid any undue conflicts.
 Contacted for comments, a Senior Manager of BUA Ports and Terminal at Port Harcourt, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed to Shipping Position Weekly that labour joined others Dock workers on the one day strike.
 The BUA officer said as measure to ensure that there was no breakdown of law and order by the dockworkers workers, they decided to lock them out from gaining access to the Quays at the ports.
A source at BUA told our correspondent that the company has been counting its losses as a result of the strike, saying: “several billions of Naira was lost because of the strike. You know what it means. There was total shut down in operations. The loss is unimaginable.
Also at PTOL in Port Harcourt Ports, the company have its story of loses as a result of the one day strike, even as dockworkers  with the Terminal Operator ( PTOL), express worry over the poor pay.
