As part measures to empower its members on how to be good stakeholders in the sector, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has disclosed that a two- week leadership training programme will be organized for its members in Dubai, the capital city of United Arab Emirate.
The two weeks programme is designed for members of the MWUN as a means of educating and enlightening them on good conduct at work place ,how to contribute their quota to the development of the maritime industry and how to be good corporate members of the maritime industry.
Presiden,t Nigeria Ports Authority [NPA] branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Comrade Adeleke Sanni told Shipping Position Daily in Lagos, last week, that it is part of the union’s effort to impart knowledge to its members, both locally and internationally.
Sanni said that the manpower training was made possible by the employer which is the NPA; even as he explained that some training programmes had earlier been organized by the union for its members in order for them to contribute their quota to the growth of the industry.
‘’At any given time, we have different courses that are treated and for the forthcoming training programme, our members will be travelling to Dubai for leadership- based training’’.
“We train our members regularly with the help of our employers and also the union has been so supportive to ensure that members are enlightened in line with what is obtainable with the port and even the president general of the union, comrade Tony Nted Emmanuel has been spending his own personal money to ensure that members are empowered’, Sanni noted.
‘’We have also engaged in training of our members in different parts of the world, we have been able to train members in countries like Ghana,South Africa, United Arab Emirate and on the local level, we have sent members to the Michael Imodu Institute of Labour studies in Ilorin, Kwara state which has imparted in their lives positively, he added.
Sanni also explained that the training of members is necessary as it will discourage them on the incessant industrial actions that were common in the past which he said has been a setback to productivity in the maritime industry.
According to him, the partnership by the employers and the union has led to industrial peace which has contributed to the high productivity that currently exists, stressing that it has immensely helped union members.
He also commended the President General, Comrade Nted Tony Emmanuel for his immense contributions toward the training of members.
