The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) yesterday called for the harmonisation of the legislative instruments of both the Nigeria Customs Service and the Council for Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN).
The Customs Act is called – Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA), while the Council for Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria is known as CRFFN Act.
Founder of the association; Dr Boniface Aniebonam, said this in a statement he made available to newsmen in Lagos.

According to him, "this is the right time for NCS and CRFFN to harmonise the two legislative instruments (CEMA and CRFFN Act) governing the administration and management of the Customs’ formalities and freight forwarding.
"Whereas, the CRFFN Act seeks to encourage professionalism, CEMA should lend support to it to achieve the concept of best practices.
“These two instruments govern the customs administrative and management processes as well as the practice of freight forwarding.
"He also advised that the two leading associations of freight forwarding and licensed customs agents in Nigeria (NAGAFF and ANLCA), with other sister associations, should work for the common good of all concerned in our international trade," it said.
Dr Aniebonam also urged freight forwarders to make genuine declarations of both imported and exported goods to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
It said that the freight forwarders should advance the course of best practices and lead by example in their business.
"When freight agents comply with the import and export regulations, the resultant effect will not only be limited to increased revenue earning to the government.
“ It will also discourage importation of substandard and fake products; and all other matters related to false declaration for customs purposes.
"The dividends of an organised and productive society will give impetus to the provision of infrastructure and other social platforms that will move Nigeria to greatness,’’ it said.
He also said that there was an urgent need for all agents of government to enforce laws and orders aimed at building a greater Nigeria.
"To achieve this, the enhanced welfare packages for government's operatives and law enforcement agents should be implemented.
“This is a road map to stem the tide of corruption in Nigeria," Aniebonam said.
