The Nigerian Naval Engineering College (NNEC) Sapele, Delta, is to be upgraded to a university, the Commandant of the College, Rear Admiral Akinjola Johnson, has said.
Johnson disclosed this in Abuja recently when he paid a courtesy call on the President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Mr Ibikunle Ogunbayo.
He said the institution was being upgraded because of the number of departments, training centres, facilities and quality of graduates it was producing.

Johnson said the main purpose of the visit was to seek possible ways of collaborating with COREN, as a regulatory body, for its professional advice.
“We want modern and world class technological skills acquisition for trained engineers.
“This will also help boost the capacity of the trained personnel and we will have better graduates from the school,’’ Johnson said.
He recalled that it was the effort to localise overseas training that led to the establishment of the Nigerian Navy Technical Training School in a temporary site in Port Harcourt in 1982.
Johnson said that the accreditation process for Higher National Diploma (HND) in electrical electronics technology, and National Diploma and HND in Marine engineering technology were in progress and had reached an advanced stage.
He also said that the NNEC, established in 2003, has marine, automobile, nuclear, biological engineering, chemical defence, damage control and fire fighting training, and air engineering schools.
Responding, the COREN President, Mr Ibikunle Ogunbayo, said the Act establishing the council mandates it to regulate the practice and training of engineering personnel in the country.
Ogunbayo said that COREN would not compromise in ensuring standard and quality of engineering programmes in the nation’s tertiary institutions.
He expressed the need for a pre-visitation of the institution “to ascertain it level of preparedness before it can be fully accredited’’.
