The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Tincan Special Area Command, said it had confiscated 521.95 kilograms of Cannabis Indica, also known as “Colorado”, worth of N1.77 billion between January to June.

Mr Mohammed Abubakar, Commander of Narcotics, NDLEA Tincan Special Area Command, said this at the 2023 International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking held in Lagos on Monday.

Abubakar said that seven persons were arrested and prosecuted in connection with the seizure.

He attributed this achievement to the unwavering commitment of the command in its relentless pursuit of eliminating drug abuse from our communities.

“The brave and dedicated members of NDLEA special area command Tincan have worked tirelessly to combat the illicit drug trade.

“Through meticulous planning and execution, their efforts have resulted in disrupting the supply chains of drug traffickers, thereby protecting countless lives from the devastating consequences of drug abuse.

“This effort has been further boosted, recently, when both NDLEA and Customs Service came together and signed a Memorandum of Understanding to share intelligence and synchronise their operations against illicit drug traffickers using the nation’s entry and exit points,” he said.

Abubakar highlighted that a significant portion of the seized drugs, particularly Cannabis Indica, originated from Canada and was smuggled in containerised vehicles.

“Known for its psychoactive properties, these seizures emphasise the critical role NDLEA play in eradicating this illicit trade.

“With over 500 kilograms confiscated during this period, which approximately represent 36.52 per cent increase in the total Canadian cannabis indica, seized last year.

“The success achieved in seizing over 500 kilograms of Cannabis indica shows dedication and commitment of the command in removing these illegal substances from streets and protecting the well-being of our citizens,” he said.

In addition to enforcement actions, Abubakar said that NDLEA Tincan had been actively engaged in the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, while it had reached thousands of individuals through the initiative.

This, he noted had been through public awareness campaigns, school programs, community engagements, and various media platforms.

“By focusing on education, prevention, and law enforcement strategies, NDLEA Tincan continues to pave the way for a drug-free future.

“NDLEA Tincan will like to extend its gratitude to the local and international law enforcement agencies collaborating with them, government bodies, and community partners for their invaluable support throughout these operations.

“Especially, Customs service, Police and NPA Tincan Island Port Command for collaborating with us to achieve this success.

“Together, we stand strong in our fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, united in our determination to create safer and drug-free communities,” he said.
