Apparently determined to address security challenges within the nation's territorial waters, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has disclosed that  it has commissioned the construction of three vessels overseas for the purpose of maritime security and that they are expected to arrive the country soon to complement current efforts to checkmate illegalities that occur within the nation’s maritime domain.

The three vessels which are currently being built in France and South Africa respectively are said to be capable of preventing and suppressing attacks from militants on government facilities which include jetties and oil installations as well as the ports.
The three vessels are named: Dorrina (Hippotamus) , Agede (Slick Fish) and Ovie.
Speaking at an interactive session with maritime journalists in Lagos yesterday, General Manager Public Affairs of the NPA Captain Iheanacho Ebubeogu disclosed that as a service provider in the country there is the need to protect government facilities.
Ebubeogu said that, “three of the vessels are expected to get outside bar which is the first line of protection for the Atlas Cove."
He added that issues of security on the nation’s waters and the ports are not what should be disclosed to the public for security reasons pointing out that it is improper to disclose information regarding security.
The image maker also noted that the agency and other relevant government security agencies are making efforts to put an end on issues bothering on maritime security.
"The permanent solution to the issue of security starts right from the sea to check everybody's movement that is coming into the port and if you look at the ISPS code ,one of the responsibilities of the port is to monitor movement of persons and we are been serious on that".
