The Managing Director of the Nigeria Ports Authority [NPA] Mallam Habibu Adullahi has described the abandoned trucks and other articulated vehicles within the nation’s seaports as a major challenge in enhancing effective port operation.
Abdullahi made this known during a two day facility tour of the Lagos Port Complex [LPC] and the Tin Can Island Port both in Lagos last week and pointed out that the high number of abandoned trucks along the port access roads of the ports is unfriendly for port business.

Abdullahi made this known during a two day facility tour of the Lagos Port Complex [LPC] and the Tin Can Island Port both in Lagos last week and pointed out that the high number of abandoned trucks along the port access roads of the ports is unfriendly for port business.
The MD stated that with the exception of the Calabar port in Cross River State and the Warri port in Delta State; all other ports in the country have been characterized with rickety vehicles abandonment within the port complex.
The NPA boss reiterated that the abandoned vehicles within the ports should be a major concern to all the terminal operators at the ports because its removal will further aid the smooth flow of cargoes in and out of the ports.
Abdullahi assured that a committee will be set up to arrest the issue at hand as it is an ugly situation to port development of the country.
‘’One of the main thing that is peculiar with the Nigeria ports ,Tin Can Island Port, Apapa port, even the ones outside Lagos with exception of Calabar and to a certain extent Warri ,is the number of abandoned vehicles queued on the roads, to me it is an eyesore’’.
‘’Some of the vehicles has been there for a long time, to me they are dirt and nobody is doing anything about them”
He charged the legal department and the operational department of the authority to come with some suggestions that will address the ugly situation in the ports.
According to him, the committee will comprise of the port Manager of the Tin Can Island Port, Mr. Ephraim Efioita and other top management executives with wealth of experience to tackle the situation.
He also added that if the vehicles that are lying within the nation’s seaports are removed, it will give room for capacity building and also increase port productivity and efficiency.
Most importantly, he said that some of the trucks which are inside the terminal are obstructing the stacking areas meant for goods to be position at the ports.
