About 24 years after it banned night pilotage of vessels in and out of the ports, the Nigerian Ports Authourity (NPA), the agency has revisited the ban and has commenced night pilotage of vessels in all the nation’s seaports.
The NPA controls eight ports located in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Onne, Calabar and Warri.

Confirming the development, the agency’s general manager, public affairs, chief Michael Ajayi, disclosed that the development is in line with the transformation agenda of the federal government and the vision of the national economic management team.
The lift of ban on night pilotage which was introduced during the nation’s civil war of 1967 and 1970 also coincided with the revelation that NPA has also commenced immediate 24-hour operations at the nation’s seaports.
According to the statement, the decision “is to ensure compliance with the 48hours window for the clearance of goods from the ports.”
The statement which was made available to Shipping Position Daily also enjoined members of the shipping community, especially, the Nigeria Customs Service, freight forwarders and relevant stakeholders “to key into these openings and ensure quick clearance of goods from the ports, enhance faster turn – around – time of vessels, and further reduce cost of doing business at the nation’s seaports.”
