The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mallam Habib Abdullahi, has said the Rivers ports Dockyard in Port Harcourt would be relocated due to environmental and natural challenges.
He disclosed in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Rivers state yesterday.
He said that most of the facilities in the Port had suffered deterioration due to old age.
‘’We have to relocate the dockyard to a more peaceful and feasible place if possible.
‘’You find that some of the vessels there, that is, the pilots’ catcher and tug, have gone aground and we have to address the issue.
‘’The problem facing the dockyard is both environmental and natural which needs to be addressed,’’ he said
Abdullahi, who was on his maiden facility tour of Eastern Ports, said that Rivers Port was built 100 years ago.
He said that the tide was low and that the dockyard challenges were caused by environmental impact.
Abdullahi said the Ports Railway rehabilitation project had reached 75 per cent completion, adding that the most important and tedious parts had been completed.
He said the target date for the completion was August and expressed optimism that it would be met as the contractors were working hard.
Abdullahi  said that the rehabilitation of the railway, when completed, would enhance the port’s transportation and increase its facilities.
He also said the ports clinic was also in deplorable state.
Abdullahi said the clinic had the problem of shortage of water, while the ambulance had broken down.
‘’These are the specific challenges facing the port that need to be addressed,’’ he said.
In his remarks earlier, Mr Sonny Nwobi, General Manager, Eastern Ports, said the Port was built 100 years ago.
He said it was not easy for a system to last for 100 years.
