The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) says construction of the second largest gas project in the world has reached advanced stage in Escravos in Delta.
NPA expects that it will be inaugurated in 2013.
General Manager, Public Affairs of NPA Chief Michael Ajayi, said this while presenting the 2011 report of the organisation to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Lagos.
He said that NPA had been providing facilities for berthing, storage and movement of cargo to the site of the gas project.
The NPA spokesperson said that going by the score card of the corporation for 2011, 43.5 million cubic metres had been dredged from the Bonny Channel from 2006 to date.
He said that this volume was achieved in partnership with the Bonny Channel Company (BCC).
Ajayi said that in the Lagos channel, the NPA worked in partnership with the Lagos Channel Management Company (LCM) and had successfully dredged 53.6 million cubic metres.
He said that in line with its goal at the beginning of the year, NPA had also successfully removed all the 24 critical wrecks in the Lagos channels.
“We have started receiving ships of 12.5 meters draught in some of the Lagos terminals and  we have rehabilitated all light houses and aids to navigation in the Lagos harbor,’’ NAN quotes him as saying.
According to him, NPA, in line with local content, has provided facility to receive oil rigs for maintenance, which hitherto used to go to Las Palmas in Spain.
He said that the corporation had established a new signal station in Calabar pilotage district to enhance maritime communication from Calabar buoy to Calabar port for the purpose of safety, security and protection of marine environment.
“We have acquired 69 channel marking buoys for Lagos Pilotage district and presently building two tug boats and two pilot cutters whose delivery will be in 2012,''Ajayi said.
He said that in the Eastern ports, one of the capital projects NPA was able to complete include connection of Onne ports to the National grid (33KVA) from FOT junction to Main Gate of the Federal Terminal, Onne, Rivers State.
The capital projects also include rehabilitation of Julius Berger Terminal ‘C’ old port Warri and AMS Terminal ‘B’ old port, in Warri, Ajayi said.
He said that development had commenced on Lekki deep sea port, while the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) of the land had been handed over to NPA for Ibaka deep sea port.
He said that part of  NPA’s achievements include immediate commencement of 24 hours operation at the ports in line with the transformation agenda of the Federal Government and the vision of the National Economic Management Team.
