NPA SCORES HIGH IN IN-HOUSE CRAFT MAINTENANCE SCHEME

Few months after introducing a new system of maintenance of its crafts and plants, the innovation has started yielding results. The system was introduced solely by the Management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for ports in the Eastern Zone.

Under the new scheme some categories of crafts and plants are being refurbished and renovated by personnel of the dockyard in the various ports with funds from a dedicated account rather than contracting such jobs.

The scheme which was introduced mid-last year has made it convenient for ports to access funds for such jobs and saved the Authority huge sums of money hitherto spent on contracting such jobs to local or foreign contractors.

Currently, there are scores of such refurbishing and renovation especially on boats and pilot cutters going in the dockyards of Rivers, Calabar and Warri Ports; all being directly handled by the personnel of the yard.

At the dockyard of Rivers Port, Port Harcourt, renovation and replanting works on one of such pilot boat PC IMO has reached an advanced stage and will soon be active for service.

Inspecting some of the renovation work during a recent visit to the dockyard in Port Harcourt, managing director, NPA, Mallam Abdul Salam Mohammed commended the efforts of the personnel of the yard and urged them to ensure the success of the scheme.

Mallam Abdul Salam expressed the strong belief that the personnel of the organisation in the various dockyards in the ports have the necessary skills, capabilities and know how to ensure the success of the scheme with dedication to duties.

The Dockyard Manager, Engr Anslem Odo had earlier told the Managing Director that “PC IMO” was docked at the yard last November and would soon be ready for commissioning and commended the management for the initiative.

Also commenting on the success recorded, general manager, Marine, Captain Iheanacho Ebubeagu acknowledged that the initiative has been a success as it had improved the skills of the dockyard personnel and encouraged the use of local contents for such jobs.

He disclosed that other boats billed for dry docking at the Rivers Port dockyard include: PC Owatoloyo, MT Balasa and MT Bajima.
