NPA Witnessed Increased Gross Tonnage Of Ocean Going Vessels, General Cargo, Container And Vehicle Traffic

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) says that it has witnessed increased gross tonnage of ocean going vessels in July, 2012, when compared with performances for the corresponding period in 2011.
According to details that were released last week, the total gross tonnage of the ocean going vessels stood at 10,862,625 metric tonnes which showed an increase of 1% over the figure of 10,758,246 for same period of July 2011.
Out of this figure, general cargo accounted for 1,125,176 metric tons, a growth of 1.6% over July 2011.

According to details that were released last week, the total gross tonnage of the ocean going vessels stood at 10,862,625 metric tonnes which showed an increase of 1% over the figure of 10,758,246 for same period of July 2011.
Out of this figure, general cargo accounted for 1,125,176 metric tons, a growth of 1.6% over July 2011.
Laden container throughput was 82,197TEUs, representing a rise of 28.1% over July 2011 figure of 64,188, while empty container throughput was 65,694TEUs, and an increase of 57.6% over July 2011 figure.
Imported vehicle traffic stood at 24,884 Units, a growth of 29% over July 2011 figure of 19,292 units.
According to the statement that was signed by NPA’s general manager, public affairs, Chief Michael Ajayi, “the ever increasing result being posted in this regard could be attributed to continuous regular capital and maintenance dredging and the 100% completion of removal of the 24 numbers critical wrecks in our channels”.
The image maker also quoted the Managing Director, Mallam Habib Abdullahi, as saying that “with the support of the Federal Government, the Authority will remain focused in constantly upgrading and improving port infrastructures in order to attract higher cargo volume and ship traffic.”
