The Nigerian Port Consultative Council (NPCC) has thrown its weight behind the Nigerian Shippers’ Council’s decision to self-collect a one percent freight stabilization fee.
During a courtesy visit to the Council’s Headquarters in Lagos, NPCC Chairman; Mr. Bolaji Sunmola affirmed the group’s support for the move, emphasizing the importance of adequate funding for the Council to carry out its regulatory functions effectively.
Highlighting the Shippers’ Council’s significant contributions to the maritime sector’s development, Sunmola underscored the necessity to bolster the Council’s regulatory authority as mediators in port operations.
A member of NPCC; Mrs. Chinwe Ezenwa echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the urgency of addressing funding challenges through government intervention.
In response, Barr. Pius Akutah, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, expressed gratitude for the NPCC’s visit and endorsement.
Akutah reiterated the Council’s proposal for a one percent freight stabilization fee to support its statutory activities, expressing confidence in the potential industry benefits once the bill, seeking to repeal the Nigerian Shippers’ Council Act CAP N133 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (LFN), is passed into law.
