NRC Receives 6 Coaches, 2 Diesel Multiple Units – Official

The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) has received six air-conditioned coaches and two sets of Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs).
The delivery took place at the Apapa Port Complex, Lagos, with the Director, Mechanical and Electrical Department, Mr Fidet Okhiria, receiving the items on behalf of the corporation’s Managing Director, Mr Adeseyi Sijuwade.
Speaking shortly after the delivery, he explained that the exercise was geared towards improving the rail transportation in Nigeria.

Speaking shortly after the delivery, he explained that the exercise was geared towards improving the rail transportation in Nigeria.
 “Sometime ago, we awarded contract for six coaches and two sets of diesel multiple units made up of three trucks and two motor cars each. So, we are happy today that we are offloading.
 “We are going to be carrying about 560 passengers per DMU, that’s 40 per cent sitting and 60 standing while in the long distance coaches we have 68 passengers with enough leg room.
 “If you look at it, the sitting arrangement is different from what we used to have. So, at no particular time will you feel you are backing where you are going. So it’s divided midway.
 “It’s quite spacious and you have hand-on carriage space. The DMUs are all air-braked and are going to be the modern automatic coupling system.
“We are going to have passenger display board on them and the doors are going to be automatically opened. Okhiria added that each coach was equipped with toilet facility, and automated doors, which would eliminate the frequent cases of people dangerously jumping into the coach.
“This time around, we are not going to have coaches that are open where people can just be jumping in; it is going to be driver-controlled.
“We have one toilet facility on each coach and in order to meet up with the present day environmental laws, the faeces are not going to be dropping on the floor.
“It is going to be gathered.
“At Iddo and Apapa we are installing facility that will vacuum-out the toilet as you have on the aircraft so that when you get to the terminal or station you suck away the human waste.”
He noted that investor-friendly laws were being formulated to make them comfortable, saying interested investors had been visiting the corporation’s workshops.
He said another set of five coaches would be delivered before the end of 2014.
