The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has commended the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, and the company’s management for the successful re-streaming of the Port Harcourt Refinery.
In a statement signed by its President, William Akporeha, and General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, the union described the commencement of crude oil processing and the dispatch of petroleum products from the refinery as a landmark achievement. According to NUPENG, this success aligns with the aspirations of Nigerian workers and citizens for energy independence and economic sustainability.
“This milestone achievement demonstrates NNPCL’s unwavering commitment to realising energy independence and fostering sustainable economic growth for our dear nation,” the statement read.
The union highlighted Kyari’s steadfast commitment and resilience in overseeing the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt Refinery Company (PHRC), noting that his efforts, despite numerous challenges, reflect the highest standards of dedication and determination.
“We are very pleased with the achievement of over 16 million man-hours without a single Loss Time Injury (LTI), a testament to meticulous planning, professionalism, and the hard work of all involved. This accomplishment brings pride to our union members,” NUPENG stated.
The union also commended the indispensable support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the NNPCL Board of Directors, staff, and contractors for their collaborative efforts in ensuring the refinery’s re-streaming. According to NUPENG, this collective commitment underscores what can be achieved when stakeholders work together toward national progress.
“As the refinery resumes production and begins loading critical products such as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and Household Kerosene (HHK), we are reminded of the essential role this progress plays in addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges, alleviating hardship for workers and citizens, and fostering economic stability,” the statement added.
NUPENG further expressed optimism about the ongoing rehabilitation of the Warri and Kaduna refineries, urging swift completion of these projects to bolster Nigeria’s energy sector and economy.
“While the successful re-streaming of the Port Harcourt Refinery stands as a beacon of hope, it also reinforces our collective optimism for the rehabilitation of the Warri and Kaduna refineries. We earnestly hope and pray that these projects will also come to fruition soon, providing the much-needed stimulus to our nation’s economy and further easing the energy burden faced by Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
