The Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Customs Service said it recorded an impressive performance in its revenue generation drive and anti-smuggling campaign even as a whooping N6,467,642,587.83 was collected between January 2014 till date as against N5,390,662,512.53, collected in the same period in 2013.

The command also passed a strong message of warning to smugglers that use unapproved routes this yuletide season to desist from the act saying that officers and men are ready to run them out of the business.

Customs Area Controller of the command, Comptroller Haruna Mahmoud was quoted in a statement made available to Shipping Position Daily, by the image maker Usman Abubakar yesterday at a press briefing in Ogun state , saying that the revenue collected is the highest ever recorded by the command.

Mahmud stated that there was a major increase on duty payable on imported vehicles adding that unscrupulous importers have been reconditioned by the effective anti-smuggling campaign since assuming office in December 2013.

Talking tough, the comptroller warned smugglers that the customs command under his watch is well fortified to tackle any form of illegalities posed by the smugglers.

"Ladies and gentlemen, let me use this forum to sound a note of warning to smugglers in Ogun state that we are now more equipped to tackle them, unless they renounce their illegitimate business of smuggling".

"This is remarkable as this mark of revenue has never been attained in the command."

"Consequently, you can see that the command is working diligently and progressively towards achieving the mandate given it."

"To this end, the huge success recorded could be attributable to the quantum leap of the imported vehicles on which import duties were collected, which hitherto were smuggled into the country without payment of import duties and taxes. "

"The unscrupulous importers are now reconditioned by the effective anti-smuggling campaign since I took over the affairs of the command in December 2013. "

"And this has forced the smugglers to resort to lawful declaration of imports and subsequent duty payment instead of risking seizure of their goods".

"It is noteworthy, that the present dynamic Nigeria customs service management team is doing it’s very best to take the service to the next level. "
