Oil and Gas Education and Research Academy is also a Joint Professional Training and a
Support International institute that offer courses relating to the offshore and onshore operations in the oil and gas sector.
The managing consultant of the academy, Mr.Imumolen Christopher told Shipping Position
Daily in Lagos last week that the institute is looking forward to adding maritime courses to the long list of programmes it already offers, adding that shipping management is an important course to consider.
‘’Shipping management is what we are looking forward to running in our academy, but it requires a lot of finance to start that course but we believe that before the end of the year we will offer courses for the maritime industry’’, he assured.
He said that as the maritime sector plays an important role in the oil and gas industry; there is the need to train individuals from the maritime industry. According to him, the institute currently trains professionals in the oil and gas sector on difference areas of specialisation.
“We offer training to environmentalist, firemen, safety officers, security officers, health specialists, riggers, welders, maintenance officers and lots more’’, he disclosed.
The consultant also noted that, “we often hear, read and watch news and stories about accident, however, we always respond reactively to and take things for granted until an accident occurs or reoccurs before taking things seriously. For example, the person in charge of  risk management must be aware that, health and safety is not one subject alone, it is an aggregate of multiple principles or it is a function of many disciplines”.
‘’For a person involved in managing health and safety, occupational risk management is necessary’, he added.
