Apparently worried by the rising spate of products adulteration, the Port Harcourt Refining Company has flagged-off campaign on the menace.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Managing Director of the company, Mr. Tony Ogbuigwe, in his speech on the occasion, which held at Eleme, urged the host communities to educate their people on the dangers of adulterating petroleum products,.
Ogbuigwe, who was represented by the Manager, Public Affairs, PHRC, Mr. Ralph Ugwu, reminded the people that adulteration of petroleum product could lead to loss of lives, destruction of property and harm the environment.
He added that adulterated products could also affect the life span of an engine or machine.
Ogbuigwe said that many parts of the country had witnessed several cases of adulterated petroleum produts with the attendant loss of lives and destruction of property.
He said, “We also want to draw your attention that adulteration of petroleum products can lead to environmental degradation or pollution.
“When you have adulterated products, you have what we call incomplete combustion. The product will not burn well, and when it does not burn well, it will produce what we call carbon monoxide.
“Carbon monoxide affects the lungs, it depletes the ozone layer, it causes a lot of pollution in the environment.”
Ogbuigwe added, “This type of pollution can lead to health harzards and health hazards can be in form of skin rashes or cancer; it can also be in form of impotence in men.
“So, the problems associated with adulteration of petroleum products is enormous.”
He said as a responsible corporate organisation, the company would not allow an act that could affect the health, live and property of its host communities to consume them.
He said that cases of pipeline vandalism in Eleme had been reduced to zero level and commended the people for their patriotism.
The Chairman of Eleme Local Government Council, Mr. Oji Ngofa, commended the company for leading the campaign against petroleum products adulteration.
Ngofa, who was represented by his chief of staff, Mr. Fineman Onugwe, said the council would take the message to its rural communities and enlighten them on the dangers posed by petroleum products adulteration.
