It was learnt that the suspects stormed the incident scene on speedboat at about 1:0am and opened fire on the victims. The victims reportedly died on the spot.
Confirming the death, Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State command; Mr Hogan Bassey, said gunmen suspected to be pirates in the early hours of Monday opened fire on a speed boat that was berthing at the Ikang jetty, killing the border policeman and some civilians in the process.
He however added that the Police have commenced investigations to uncover what actually transpired.
He however said the attack may have been unprovoked, adding that they were on the trail of the criminals and assured that those involved would be brought to book soon. Eye witnesses said the attack may have been revenge to the Navy’s recent onslaught against some pirates along the Calabar waterways.
