According to press statement issued about the meeting in Port Harcourt last week by the Chief Port Public Affairs Officer of Port Harcourt Ports, Mrs. B EjemehNchey- Achukwu, the port manager who also inaugurated a nine-member committee, urged the body to act as an interface between management and Bundu- Ama community as one of the host communities of NPA.
In a separate meeting with the Bundu- Ama community, which was attended by the18 -man newly elected executive of Bundu – Ama community, the Port Manager, expressed appreciation to the Bundu -Ama community for their peaceful disposition towards the ports and its management.
He stated that he was impressed by the reports of the conduct of a peaceful election through which a new executive emerged without a fight. Mr. Alabi said he is aware on the issues they raised which border on the needs of their community, especially as it concerns employment of their youths.
As a strategy to address youth employment, the Ports Manager said certain category of the work force in NPA and the terminal operators have been set aside for the host community urging the leadership to compile list of their youths from 18-20 years and above, and submit to them with a view to find ways to address the problem.
Earlier in an address, the leader of the delegation and chairman of the new executive counciul, Prince Dr. William Addah expressed concern that the community was neglected not only by NPA, but also by the terminal operators.
The leader called on the management of Rivers Port to facilitate an understanding that will make the Terminal Operators including BUA and PTOL to recognize the status of Bundu -Ama Community as their host.
Some of the problems facing the community, Dr. Addah said include high rate of unemployment especially among youths, non-patronage of contract awards to their indigenes, bad road network in their community and nonexistent of community projects in their area, among others.
The community assure the port management of their readiness to give their support in carrying out their assigned functions.
However it could be recalled that the terms of reference given to the newly constituted 9 – Man Committee, to interface between management and Bundu – Ama community includes to find out on definite action plan to execute NPA’s corporate responsibility to the community, discovering on best ways to empower indigenes of the community, examining specific issues bordering on the community, and working out modalities on how to tackle the issues.
Among members of the committee, so appointed by the Port Manager Mr. Alabi include four persons from Bundu – Ama community, three persons from Rivers Port Complex, while 1 person each is to come from the two Terminal Operators – BUA, and PTOL.
