The volume of containers through India’s Port of Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva) hit an “all-time high” of 4.32 million 20-foot equivalent units in fiscal 2011-12 ending March 31.
The record throughput was up about 1.5 percent from 4.27 million TEUs in 2010-11, the port authority said in a statement Wednesday.
Gateway Terminals, Nehru’s largest container facility operated by APM Terminals, moved 1.89 million TEUs, up from 1.85 million TEUs a year earlier.

Gateway Terminals, Nehru’s largest container facility operated by APM Terminals, moved 1.89 million TEUs, up from 1.85 million TEUs a year earlier.
Traffic through DP World’s Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal totaled 1.4 million TEUs, down from 1.54 million TEUs.
Volume via the state-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Container Terminal increased to 1.03 million TEUs from 880,000 TEUs.
Officials said total cargo tonnage for 2011-12 was estimated at 65.75 million tons, with containerized tonnage amounting to 58.25 million tons.
“We are taking steps to develop additional capacity to cope with the projected growth in traffic volume,” port chairman L. Radhakrishnan said, releasing the latest traffic figures.
Projects in the pipeline include development of a 4.8 million TEU fourth terminal in two phases; a $320 million contract to deepen the main access channel to 46 feet; and a fifth terminal for which preliminary studies are underway.
Nehru is India’s largest container gateway, accounting for almost 65 percent of the country’s total containerized export and import cargo. According to a recent port plan, the west coast hub is expected to handle 11 million TEUs by 2015-16 and roughly 23 million TEUs by 2024-25.
