The House of Representatives has mandated its committees on marine transport  and environment to appraise and evaluate the environmental impact assessment and health safety report for the establishment of the proposed Ibaka Deep Seaport.
The resolution emanated from a motion moved by Rep. Robinson Uwak (PDP-Akwa Ibom) and 18 other members was unanimously adopted without debate.
To this end, it urged the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to set up a Joint Technical and Implementation Committee for the establishment of Ibaka Deep Seaport.

The House added that the committee must include the host community.
It advised NPA to submit to the Committee on Transport an integrated strategic Regional Impact Assessment covering the environmental, social, health and security impacts of establishing the seaport.
Uwak stressed the need for the people of Mbo Local Council, where the proposed deep seaport would be sited, to be involved in the activities of the project.
"The interest of the people of Mbo must be protected and guaranteed, especially as it relates to the acquisition of their land for the establishment of the seaport," he said.
He said that the ownership structure and operations of the seaport should be made transparent and accountable.
The legislator urged the House to take action to ensure that the project was transparently executed.
The motion was referred to the Committees on Marine Transport and Environment for further legislative inputs.
