The House of Representatives Committee on marine transport yesterday begin what can be described as its first reaction to the controversial maritime security contract between the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and a private firm; Messrs Global West Vessel Specialist.
Flagging-off its two-day visit to the headquarters of NIMASA, chairman of the committee, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi disclosed that the committee members were in Lagos to look into the execution of capital projects that have so far been implemented by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA)
Hon Uguanyin said that the law makers are interested in NIMASA capital projects especially the one involving the recent Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements under the agency.
Even though he refused to field questions from journalists, Ugwuanyi disclosed that the committee intends to carry out a thorough investigation and dialogue at NIMASA, get back to Abuja and deliberate on its findings before it will make a public statement on them.
Speaking earlier, the Director General of NIMASA, Mr. Patrick Akpobolokemi expressed appreciation to the committee for the passage of the NIMASA 2012 budget.
He also confirmed that the only capital project that was carried out by NIMASA was the one approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on maritime security.
The committee was last week at the eastern maritime operations zone, where it toured the Port Harcourt, port in Rivers state.
