The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria [RTEAN] has lamented on the low patronage on its trucks at the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal [KLT] attributing the situation to low cargo throughput.
Speaking with our correspondent in Lagos, the Chairman, KLT Chapter of [RTEAN] Chief Godwin Ikeji, explained that the transfer of cargoes from the two major ports; Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island has been very low for a while and members are not happy with situation.

Speaking with our correspondent in Lagos, the Chairman, KLT Chapter of [RTEAN] Chief Godwin Ikeji, explained that the transfer of cargoes from the two major ports; Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island has been very low for a while and members are not happy with situation.
Ikeji told Auto Port Weekly that the trucks that are supposed to lift containers from the terminals are not fully engaged because business activities at the terminal are not encouraging.
He added that apart from the low cargo throughput at the two terminals located in Kirikiri town ,the roads needed to be upgraded even as he added that the poor state of the road leading to the terminal has pose a major threat on their vehicles.
‘’cargo throughput is low here and you know that KLT one and KLT two are partially off dock terminals, and vessels do not berth directly here rather they are been transferred from the ports in Lagos so cargoes only come to this place whenever it is available on transfer’’.
‘’Though it is not our making but that of the shipping companies and terminal operators ,we don’t have much to do about that but I must say that business is not as the way it used to be because the throughput cannot be compared to that of the Apapa port and that of the Tin Can Island port’’.
The RTEAN chairman also said that trucks owned by members of the association are in good conditions to convey cargoes to any part of the country even with the deplorable states of the Nigerian roads.
He also lamented that trucks parked indiscriminately along the roads has made it difficult for trucks to gain access into the terminals to lift consignment. He added that this is one of the challenges being encountered at the KLT.
