SGS Scanning Nigeria Limited, a destination inspection service provider, has recorded another milestone in the execution of its contract with the Federal Government, with the successful conclusion of the special training for a select team of 80 Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) officers, expected to take over services being provided by the company under the Destination Inspection (D.I.) scheme from 2013.

Members of D.I. Transition Team were selected from the best among those trained by the D.I. service provider since 2006 under the NCS Secondment Programme. The training which was flagged off in April was concluded on Friday 31 August 2012, at the Customs Training School in Ikeja. The on-the-job training covered all aspects of the D.I activities being handled by SGS for Nigeria Customs Service, with emphasis on actual risk analysis and processing of the importer’s Final Document resulting in classification and valuation opinion.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Acting Commandant of the College, Deputy Comptroller Madugu S.J., said the programme has been a great success in terms of organization by the service provider and conduct of the trainees.
“This programme has been a success all the way. The quality of training by SGS has been impressive. Despite the challenges, you have conducted yourselves well and I am proud of you all. We hope SGS will have another opportunity to organise similar training for other officers of the Service.  I will call on you to use the knowledge imparted on you to support the Service especially in revenue collection and trade facilitation. The goal behind this type of training is improved performance, and I want you all to work hard in that aspect of revenue collection”, he stressed.
Also speaking on behalf of his Managing Director, Mr. Nigel Balchin, the company’s Operations Manager, Mr. Muyiwa Olaniyan, admonished members of the team to rise to the occasion whatever responsibility is handed to them. “At SGS we are committed to quality service delivery, we’re very glad to be part of this success story and we look forward to Nigeria Customs Service taking charge of the D.I. programme. The knowledge you have acquired is for the benefit of Nigeria Customs Service and ultimately that of the Nigerian economy. We wish you the best in your future endeavours, he said.
Responding on behalf of the trainees, Assistant Comptroller of Customs, (Mrs.) Shotobi M.B., thanked the management of NCS for “granting some of us the opportunity to be part of the future Nigeria Customs Service, and like the Managing Director of SGS promised at the beginning of this training we have been taken through the rudiments of classification and valuation in line with best practices and World Customs Organisation (WCO) standards. We are indeed set to drive the transformation agenda of the Comptroller General, she said.
