SHIP WRECKS: Lagos Coastlines Are Almost Gone——LASG

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has once again raised an alarm on the damaging effect of abandoned vessels and wrecks along the coastline and shorelines of the state, saying that most the beach and residential estates in Lagos are almost wiped off by the damaging impact.
Fashola who was represented by the Lagos State Commissioner of Transport, Mr. Kayode Opeifa raised the alarm in Lagos last week at the just-concluded Nigerian Maritime Expo, NIMAREX 2013.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has once again raised an alarm on the damaging effect of abandoned vessels and wrecks along the coastline and shorelines of the state, saying that most the beach and residential estates in Lagos are almost wiped off by the damaging impact.
Fashola who was represented by the Lagos State Commissioner of Transport, Mr. Kayode Opeifa raised the alarm in Lagos last week at the just-concluded Nigerian Maritime Expo, NIMAREX 2013.
Fashola said that the vessels that are presently abandoned on the Lagos coastline are having dire consequences on the State, particularly communities along the shore.

Speaking, he said that “The problem of shipwrecks has rendered the Lagos coastlines unsafe as we wanted it to be, they are found all over and it’s very expensive for us to maintain, the recent ocean surge along Oniru is a testimony of this, the Oniru estate, Alpha beach and a whole lot of Lagos beaches are almost gone, and one of the cause is the shipwrecks”
Fashola also pointed out that the greatest of the investments in Lagos will be recorded when the proposed deep-sea ports at the Lekki and Badagry have been completed. He pointed out that the creation of the deep-sea ports will further ensure that Nigeria takes its rightful place as leading port in Africa.
The Governor reiterated that the Apapa-Oshodi expressway is under heavy pressure and that the government will soon bring back the rail lines within the state so as to ease off the pressure. He said that the rehabilitation of the Ijora rail lines has been awarded.
