In a chat with the Head of Department, Shipping Management of the institution, Mr. Chris Sadoh, told Shipping Position Daily in Lagos that a lot of Nigerian youths are eager to learn and tap knowledge from the maritime sector, but the awareness is low, which in turn is a major setback.
Sadoh advised that the newly- admitted students should take their studies very seriously as the school authority has zero tolerance for cadets who violate the rules and regulations that govern the school.
According to him, since the inception of the institution, shipping management has always recorded the highest number of intakes, adding that this has to do with administration and entrepreneurship and that it is purely a management course which cuts across pure science, art and commercial studies.
“In the world at large, people tend to love management courses because they believe that management courses can make the individual do things the way he wants it and some do not want to work as subordinate rather they prefer to manage their own resources, that is one major reason they opted for a career in any management programme even though it has to do with the maritime industry or not and the managerial skills that has been acquired while in school can enable the student to set up a small scale business after school’’, he stated.
He also urged the new cadets to emulate the senior cadets who devote most of their time to studies rather than social activities which could affect their performances and the purpose of the diploma programme.
‘It is important for one to study very hard so that by the end of the day such cadet could be able to defend himself or herself whenever the need arises. It is better for all the new intakes to look up to their seniors at the academy that are very serious with their studies, rather to go about with those who are not serious”, Sadoh said.
He also noted that the danger in late resumption by senior cadets will hinder their academic performance as scores from continuous assessment and practical tests are some of the essential ingredients that are required in any maritime training.
