The rector, Dr Reuben ovai has appealed to journalist in the print and electronic media to create awareness towards maritime education in the country. Ovai who made the plea in Ogun state yesterday, said that lack of awareness by the media has made the maritime institutes to suffer a major setback.
Speaking with Shipping Position Daily in his office, the rector said that maritime institutions in the country do not have a voice; therefore the media should go all out to seek for information as it will aid the industry to move forward.
He said that the maritime institutions are being misrepresented by the media, mostly the non- governmental institutions.
According to him, the maritime sector has a lot of offer in terms of human capacity and revenue generation to the government of the nation, adding that much attention needs to be given.
He reiterated that Nigerians do not know much about maritime education and that is why the Nigerian press has a lot to do in order to inform the society about the benefit of the maritime sector to the economy of the country.
Ovai however tasked both the electronic and print media to visit maritime schools to know about issues challenging and surrounding maritime schools.
"Both the electronic and print media should take up the task and project maritime education to Nigerians so that Nigerians can be informed and we all can take advantage of it, one of the issues falling on us since we are yet to get united to form a forum, we do not call on the press for interviews and as such the press do not know much about the maritime schools. However they give us all sort of names like mushroom schools and that has tarnished the image of maritime schools in the country", he stated.
He further stressed that " for the maritime sector to develop, the institutes involved have a major role to play", adding that "the youths of this nation find it difficult to gain admission into tertiary institutions and opportunities abound in the maritime institutions, but awareness about these schools has been a problem and of course.
