Tally Clerks, Dock Workers Raise Alarm Over Unpaid Arrears

Tally Clerks and dock workers who work at the Port Harcourt ports have raised alarm over the non-payment of their arrears, pleading that appropriate authorities responsible for the delay should come to their aid.
Shipping Position Daily correspondent in Port Harcourt who visited the pool at the Port Harcourt ports confirmed that more than 20 tally clerks, seaman and dockworkers were  at a meeting to discuss the non-payment of various arrears and allowances due to them.

Speaking to our correspondent under condition of anonymity, a tally clerk who claimed to have served for more than 15 years lamented that the non- payment is causing hardship to his family. He said that as things stand now with fuel subsidy removal and increase in transportation, goods and services, they are finding it difficult to cope.
Another unpaid worker; a middle aged man who also pleaded anonymity explained that the unpaid arrears include: money from International Maritime Organization (IMO) which they are paying Dock workers through the World Bank.
Although, he said that the matter had been in court for about 12 years, he explained that they are happy that court finally granted judgment in their favour. But he regretted that even as it stands now, they have not received the money.
The pool tally clerks and dockworkers also alleged that their union leaders have been ganging-up to short -change them in the course of various payments.
According to the them, payment of their pension, which ought to make each of them richer by N800,000, their union leaders ganged-up with the pension administrators and paid them only N60,000.
“Where is the balance of the N740, 000”, the pool tally clerks asked, even as they also expressed worry that their take- home pay had remained stagnant for several years, irrespective of the current inflation in the country.
