A chieftain of the Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) Alhaji Kazeem Olayiwola who spoke with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week said that the scarcity in the state is caused mainly by vandalization of oil pipelines that supply product to the depot as well as the epileptic power supply in the state.
He explained that the same development was obtainable in Oyo and some parts of Ibadan but that currently there are enough products for distribution from the Ibadan axis due to government intervention.
Even though sources at tank farms in Lagos confirmed that there are products at the depot and that there is no cause for alarm, some of the drivers who spoke to our correspondent lamented that it sometimes take them three to four days on queue before they are able to get product.
According to findings, several filling stations in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, are always having long queues of buyers while others were shut due to lack of petrol.
Some of the filling stations were also reported to be hoarding the product, a development which made the Kwara State Governor to intervene last week by reading riot acts to the filling stations who apart from hoarding also adjust their measuring meters, thereby cheating desperate buyers.
Members of the state task force on petroleum product who were on an assessment tour of the NNPC depot in Oke-Oyi last week assured that the task force was determined to give necessary support that will ensure the persistent scarcity of fuel in the state is brought to an end.
The task force also appealed to the people to join hands with the government in its efforts to secure NNPC pipelines against vandalism.
