Tanko Vows Unyielding Fight Against Corruption at Ports Amidst Smear Campaign

The National Coordinator of the 100 percent Compliance team of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF),Ibrahim Tanko, has said he remains resolute and determined to eradicate illicit trade practices within the maritime industry amidst a vicious smear campaign aimed at undermining his anti-corruption efforts at the ports.

Tanko addressed the unwarranted attacks and false accusations in Lagos recently while reaffirming his team’s unwavering commitment to combating corruption. He referred to those behind the campaign as “doubtful characters” while emphasizing that their efforts would not derail the ongoing crusade against malpractices.

He said the controversy stemmed from a petition filed by the NAGAFF Compliance team, exposing the illicit operations of bonded terminal operators, including acts of sabotage, security breaches, and economic crimes.

However,  he said a faceless group criticized the team for allegedly failing to address common issues faced by freight forwarders and not condemning unfavorable government policies.

Responding to these allegations, Tanko asserted that his primary focus was promoting fair trade practices among industry stakeholders. He acknowledged the dangers associated with being an anti-corruption crusader, recognizing that corruption would always fight back.

Regarding the increase in Customs exchange rates, Tanko clarified that the policy was formulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Ministry of Finance, emphasizing that the Nigeria Customs Service was responsible for its implementation.

He further highlighted his consistent battles with various government agencies within the maritime industry, demonstrating his commitment to fighting for the welfare of freight forwarders and the industry as a whole. He dismissed the accusations made by the anonymous group, suggesting their claims were poorly briefed and indicative of their complicity in illicit practices.

Tanko vowed to remain steadfast in his crusade against corruption. He declared that no amount of intimidation, blackmail, or character assassination would hinder his team’s efforts.

Tanko pledged to ensure all stakeholders adhere to regulations and hold perpetrators of illicit practices accountable.

In conclusion, Tanko challenged members of the anonymous group to present verifiable evidence supporting their allegations, maintaining that a clear conscience fears no accusation.
