Terminal Operator Sets to Evacuate Food Vendors From Tin Can Island Port

As part of efforts to ensure that the crowd accessing the port is brought to the
barest minimum, Five Star Logistics Limited, a terminal operator at the Tin Can Island
port said it has concluded plans to evacuate all food vendors and other hawkers that are
presently occupying the common -user areas from the port with effects from 12th
of January 2012.

port said it has concluded plans to evacuate all food vendors and other hawkers that are
presently occupying the common -user areas from the port with effects from 12th
of January 2012.
A letter to this effect has also been written by the Terminal operator to other
stakeholders at the Tin Can port including; the Nigeria Customs, Immigration, the
Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), director of the SSS, the RORO port police and other
security agencies to notify them of the decision.
The letter which was sighted by Shipping Position Daily  yesterday and which was dated 16th of January 2012 and signed by Mr. Mr. Gabriel J. A for the management of the company stated that the management is banning the food sellers for security reasons, and stressed that as they are attracting a large  crowd into the terminal, "it portends danger if not checked now and this should be the concern of everybody" the letter reads in part.
An evacuation notice has also been issued to the food sellers and the other hawkers
who access the port on daily basis that none of them is permitted to access the port as from next week Monday except the approved food vendors using the terminal's canteen.
However, some of the defiant hawkers selling soft drinks told our correspondent that they have no where to move to and that even if they leave the port now; they are sure after a period of time they will still find their way back into the terminal.
