Weeks after the closure of the Tin can Island Motor Park by the Nigeria Port Authority as a means of sanitizing the port, auto dealers at the premises of the Conoil filling station at the second gate of the Tin Can Island Port may commence business activities soon.
This was revealed to Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week by a source who is equally a dealer of fairly used vehicles at the park.
Weeks after the closure of the Tin can Island Motor Park by the Nigeria Port Authority as a means of sanitizing the port, auto dealers at the premises of the Conoil filling station at the second gate of the Tin Can Island Port may commence business activities soon.
This was revealed to Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week by a source who is equally a dealer of fairly used vehicles at the park.
The source who prefers anonymity said that the only problem they are facing at the moment is the rent of the premises that is still accruable to the Nigeria Port Authority [NPA] by the occupants of the place.
He explained that some of the auto dealers have been able to release their vehicles from where they had been trapped for over several weeks.
‘’On my own part I have been able to remove the few fairly used vehicles from the hands of the authority in charge and hopefully after the negotiations is over the place will be opened for business’’, he said.
The auto dealer also disclosed that the vehicles that were carted away last year are traceable to Festac Town along Lagos Badagry Expressway.
He said ‘’gradually, those that have their vehicles trapped over there are making progress on the removal of their vehicles as we speak”
It would be recalled that the men of the Nigeria Navy raided the premises of the Tin Can Island Motor Dealers Park in December where over one thousand vehicles were carted away to an unknown destination.
It was alleged that the order on the evacuation of the premises came from the minister of transport as part of the process of sanitizing the port environment.
In a telephone chat with the chairman of the Tin Can Island Motor Dealers Association, Mr.Olawale Ariyo, he said the hope of returning to the premises is slim even as the negotiation is ongoing.
The chairman said that the association has shifted their attention to secure another place whilst the negotiation is still on.
Olawale said that the important thing at the moment is for those that are yet to remove their vehicles from the hands of the authority to get their vehicles out as it is the only means of their livelihood.
