The number of foreign trade containers handled by the Port of Tokyo rose 2.2 percent in 2012 from a year earlier to a record high of 4.235 million 20-foot-equivalent units, according to preliminary figures released by the Tokyo metropolitan government.
In 2012, the Port of Tokyo, Japan’s largest container port, exported 1.948 million TEUs of containers, up 1.9 percent from 2011, and imported 2.287 million TEUs of containers, up 2.5 percent from 2011.

In 2012, the Port of Tokyo, Japan’s largest container port, exported 1.948 million TEUs of containers, up 1.9 percent from 2011, and imported 2.287 million TEUs of containers, up 2.5 percent from 2011.
In terms of tonnage, the port handled 45.302 million tons of container cargo in foreign trade in 2012, up 1.4 percent from a year earlier. Container cargo exports totaled 12.491 million tons, down 0.1 percent, and container cargo imports amounted to 32.811 million tons, up 1.9 percent.
China and the United States are the Port of Tokyo’s largest- and second-largest trading partners in terms of container trade.
In 2012, the port’s container cargo exports to China, including Hong Kong, grew 2.3 percent to 4.668 million tons, while its container cargo imports from China increased 2.1 percent to 15.860 million tons.
The Port of Tokyo’s container cargo exports to the U.S. edged up 0.9 percent last year to 2.490 million tons, while its container cargo imports from the U.S. rose 6.7 percent to 3.742 million tons.
