Even though automobile experts and other stakeholders in the automobile industry have described Toyota Camry 2.2 as the most sought-after brand in 2012, they have also described the car as the most sought-after by car thieves among all the vehicles imported into Nigeria.
Findings by Auto Port Weekly revealed that one of the attractions about the Toyota Camry to car thieves, especially the 1998 -2002 (pencil light and envelope light) models is the design of the car keys, the keys appear to be similar despite its model.

Another parameter used to for the conclusion is that there is always a standby customer to buy the car whenever it is available.
Apart from the Toyota Camry cars, Honda Accord and Nissan Pathfinders have also been described as cars that attracted a lot of thieves in the year 2012.
Experts told Shipping Position Daily that behind every stolen vehicle in Nigeria, two people are usually involved, the first is an insider to the owner of the vehicle, he knows all about the documents of the car. The second person is always a technician.
Some car experts have also argued that a stolen Toyota Camry car usually post problems because the keys (especially for ‘pencil light’ brands) can actually activate  the 2001 model of the brand which is known as ‘envelop light’. They also said that the price of the car after theft is always cheaper at the point of sale.
An Automobile technician Mr. Tunde Adeduro in a chat with our correspondent said that Nigerians are deceived by manufacturers of automobiles, according to him; vehicles with programmed keys are mostly vulnerable to car thieves.
The technician also revealed that a larger percentage of engraved stolen vehicles are from the Toyota Camry brands which makes the part to be common in all of the markets where spare parts are sold.
Investigations have also revealed popular spare parts market where the atrocity is being committed to include: Lawanson market, Ladipo, Owode and Trinity market; these are where cars are crushed into parts.
