Taiwanese shipping company Wan Hai Lines has hosted a naming ceremony for a new eco-friendly 13,100 containership at Samsung Heavy Industries’ (SHI) Geoje shipyard.
As informed, the vessel WAN HAI A09 is the third vessel in the series of 13,100 TEU containerships built by SHI.
The 13,100 TEU series is designed with a length overall of 335 meters, a breadth of 51 meters, a draft of 16 meters and a maximum cruising speed of 22 knots.
The containership takes energy efficiency and environmentally-friendly aspects into account. It is equipped with full balanced twisted bulb rudders, pre-swirl fin and meets the highest level of requirement for Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for phase III in advance.
Besides that, all the ships delivered are certified with “Smart Ship” notations.
According to the company, WAN HAI A09 will be delivered in late February 2023 and deployed from Asia to North America service.
These new vessels are part of Wan Hai Lines’ efforts to ensure its continuous pursuit of a fleet upgrade. The first two vessels of this class were named in October last year.
The firm assigned up to $ 1.035 billion in March 2021 for nine 13,100 TEU vessels. Five newbuilds of the same size were ordered from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HII), while the remaining four vessels will be built at SHI.
The 13,000 TEU ships will be the biggest in the company’s fleet in terms of capacity, outstripping the current 11,923 TEU containerships.
The company’s fleet renewal push is seen as Wan Hai’s attempt of solidifying its position as the largest intra-Asian carrier and bolster its global standing.
