Mr. Joseph Ugbaja, Head, Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) in Abia, has said that the organization destroys products because they are substandard and not because they are not registered.

Ugbaja made the clarification in an interview in Aba, Abia State on Wednesday on the agency’s plans to start de-shelving unregistered products in the state.

The Director-General of SON, Dr Joseph Odumodu, had directed that such products be de-shelved in the first quarter of the year to ensure sanity in the markets.

Ugboaja said that SON sensitized manufacturers first and informed them of how to meet the requirement for product registration and the benefits before taking punitive actions against defaulting manufacturers.

He said that it was after the sensitization that SON moved to de-shelve products.

Ugboaja also said that the agency destroyed products after tests showed they had failed to meet standard requirements.

He said that SON encouraged manufacturers to register their products so as to keep them in business and serve the society better.

Ugboaja pointed out that manufacturers and small scale industrialists were often afraid of registering their products because of cost.

According to him, SON’s financial demand for product registration is cheap enough not to scare away any conscientious manufacturer.

He said that the evidence of the cheap registration process could be seen in the ease at which bakers registered their products. He however warned that SON would not lower the standards.
