Freighter struck ferry, Dhaka, dozens missing – is freighter to be blamed?

General cargo ship RUPSHI – 9 collided with commuter ferry in Meghna river in Narayanganj, just outside Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Mar 20. Ferry with some 30-50 passengers on board was crossing the river, probably tried to pass ahead of RUPSHI – 9, but failed and was struck by freighter. Ferry capsized, people were jumping overboard, at least 6 dead bodies were recovered, dozens are feared missing. The ship has been detained, Master probably arrested, Governmental Investigative Committee established, investigation under way.

It is highly probable, that RUPSHI – 9 just couldn’t do much or anything at all to avoid deadly collision, taking into account such factors as fairway narrows, strong river current, lack of time to respond to ferry’s dangerous crossing of the ship’s way.
