Filipino crew died trying to assist pilot boarding
A Filipino crew member of a Capesize bulk carrier HELLASSHIP fell into water while trying to assist pilot boarding bulk carrier in rough weather, off Gijon, Spain, at night Apr 1. A massive SAR was launched, deploying SAR boats and helicopter, but he wasn’t found during nighttime. His body was found and recovered in the morning Apr 2, he drowned though he was wearing a life jacket. HELLASSHIP berthing was cancelled, she was berthed at around noon Apr 2.
VLCC interrupted voyage to medevac sick crew, South China sea
VLCC C FREEDOM interrupted her voyage from Korea to Singapore on Apr 1, in South China sea, and called Nha Trang anchorage, Vietnam, to transfer to hospital sick Third Officer of Filipino nationality. Vietnamese MRCC on Apr 1 received distress message requesting medical assistance for crew member suffering from abdominal pain, headache and cough. It was decided to medevac sick seaman in waters off Nha Trang. C FREEDOM reached Nha Trang anchorage at around 2200 LT Apr 1, understood she didn’t anchor, and resumed voyage in about an hour and a half, after Third Officer was disembarked. His condition is said to be stable.
Containers loss, Bay of Biscay
Container ship AVILA lost 2 containers overboard in Bay of Biscay some 12 nm off Cape Busto, Spain, in the afternoon Mar 31. The ship was en route from Bilbao to Vigo, but after containers loss in adverse weather conditions, she was diverted to Gijon, probably to secure shifted containers stacks. Lost containers weren’t found, presumably they sank. Containers are loaded with tires and plastic package materials.
Container ship struck wreck while entering Thessaloniki, damaged
Greek Coast Guard reported an accident at Thessaloniki port, which occurred on Apr 3, at around 1655 UTC, in approach fairway. Container ship ANNABA struck chartered wreck while entering port, and suffered portside hull crack. She was berthed same day and as of Apr 5, remained berthed, until completion of investigation.

Freighter sank in Med, 9 missing
General cargo ship JOE 2 sank early in the morning Apr 5 off Kumluca, Antalya Province, NW of Cyprus, while en route from Iskenderun Turkey to Izmail Ukraine. Of 14 crew on board, 5 were rescued, 9 are missing, SAR under way. No information yet on disaster cause.
