Fire on tanker claimed 5 lives, Riau Archipelago, Indonesia

Fire erupted in reportedly, engine room of tanker TIGER SEA on Apr 17, somewhere in Riau Archipelago waters, South China sea. Local sources said 5 Indonesian crew were lost in accident, other sources said 1 crew died in explosion and 2 went missing. As of Apr 19, ship’s condition and status are unknown, as well as number of crew and their fate. Tanker departed from Johor, Malaysia, destination unknown, last AIS dated Apr 13, when she was at Johor Anchorage.

Cocaine bust on bulk carrier, Venice

Bulk carrier ATLAS arrived at Venice Italy in the morning Apr 17, from Santos Brazil, but instead of berthing, she was anchored in front of Malamocco, and thoroughly searched by Coast Guard, Customs and Police. 850 kilos of cocaine packed in several kilos packs were found hidden around the ship, in air vents, mostly. Crew and Captain strongly denied any involvement, but it is highly doubtful, considering the circumstances. The ship was berthed at Marghera in the afternoon Apr 20, after underwater hull survey. Authorities said they have reasons to believe more cocaine is to be found, search to be continued.

Cargo ships collided in Rostov port, Russia

General cargo ship KAMILLA collided with, or contacted, general cargo shop POLA ALEXIA, while maneuvering to berth at Rostov-on-Don port, Russia, Azov sea, on Apr 16. Status of POLA ALEXIA at the time of accident unclear – either berthed, or anchored. Both ships understood to sustain some damages, extent unknown. No leak reported.

Chinese freighter stuck in buoy chain in port harbor, Japan

Chinese general cargo ship RUN DONG 2 at around 0600 Tokyo time Apr 18 struck red navigational buoy No.2 at Noshiro harbor, northwest Honshu, while maneuvering to berth. Ship’s propeller got entangled in buoy chain, and as of 1440 Tokyo time, the ship was still stuck in harbor with tug and patrol ship nearby, plan is to cut off chain and then tow the ship to berth.

WILSON cargo ship on rocks, Iceland

Apr 18: General cargo ship WILSON SKAW ran aground at around 1400 UTC Apr 18 north of Hvammstangi, northwest Iceland.

Apr 19 0420 UTC UPDATE Ship’s en route from Hvammstangi to Holmavík with cargo of salt. Fore ballast tanks were breached with ensuing water ingress, patrol ship FREYJA (IMO 9455105) is on the scene, divers are to inspect ship’s bottom before refloating attempts. The ship ran aground on a rocky bottom. Owner is to assign a salvage company. No leaks reported.

Russian fishing vessel on fire, Japan sea

Apr 21 1400 Seoul time UPDATE: KALTAN was towed to Ulsan, and berthed. Firefighting and search for 4 missing fishermen continues. KALTAN was en route from Busan to Russia.

Russian fishing vessel KALTAN caught fire early in the morning Seoul time Apr 21, some 28 nm SE of Ulsan, Korea, Japan sea. Ulsan Coast Guard responded, sending CG and SAR ships to disabled, drifting vessel. Of 25 crew on board, 21 were rescued, 4 went missing. Firefighting and search for missing crew continue, notwithstanding deteriorating weather. KALTAN is to be towed to Ulsan, says Coast Guard.
