The world’s largest containership was named the “MSC MICHEL CAPPELLINI” in a ceremony held on July 17th. The event took place at the Stromkaje Terminal in BREMERHAVEN, where an additional Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to enhance cooperation on the use of shore power for MSC ships at the port.

China’s Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu constructed this impressive vessel for the Bank of Communications and Financial Leasing, while MSC operates it commercially. A remarkable addition to the MSC’s Celestino Maresca class, the ship is now the largest in its category. It is officially registered in Liberia and has been classed by DNV, earning the Route Specific Container Stowage (RSCS) notation.

The MSC MICHEL CAPPELLINI stands an astounding 400 meters in length and spans 62 meters in width. With its enormous capacity, it can carry up to 24,346 containers stacked in 24 rows.

Furthermore, the ship complies with the stringent IMO Tier III emission standards set by the International Maritime Organization. Employing advanced technologies like Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and air lubrication technology, the vessel effectively reduces its emissions. Additionally, the ship is equipped with shore power capabilities and a Hybrid Scrubber generously provided by Wärtsilä.

The MoU for shore power was signed by key figures, including Soren Toft, CEO of MSC; Kai Stührenberg, State Councilor at the Senator for Economics, Ports, and Transformation; and Robert Howe, Bremenports Managing Director. The shore power systems are expected to come online in January 2025, a significant step towards sustainability. Notably, the Port of BREMERHAVEN assures that the electricity for these systems will be sourced from renewable energy sources
