• Accuses Management of Poor Salary, Welfare Package
Employees of foremost concessionaire, APM Terminals Limited in Apapa port have accused the company’s management of poor welfare package and inappropriate salary.
And to demonstrate their displeasure over what one of them referred to as insensitivity on the part of the company’s management, the embittered workers paralysed operational activities in the terminal throughout Thursday last week.
An eyewitness account told our correspondent that the strike became noticeable earlier in the morning when interconnectivity between the company and Customs were lost and apprehensive customs licensed agents could not even access their containers.
As a result of the industrial action, hundreds of containers that would have been delivered to their consignees were stranded; a development which was decried by angry licensed customs agents.
Shipping Position Weekly gathered from some of the workers that apart from negotiations for salary which has been deferred till next year, the company is supposed to pay a new set of medical and health allowances that were not paid.
Confirming the ugly development, president of the dockworkers branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adeyanju told our correspondent that his members were part of the protests, but added that the management has agreed to pay the embittered workers the medical allowances. He also confirmed that all matters pertaining to salary have been put on hold until March 2010.
